Maltepe Mall

Permanent Retail Graphics | Istanbul, Turkey

Located in Istanbul, Turkey, the Maltepe Mixed Use Development, envisioned by DDG’s architecture studio, is a four-level underground mall with four levels of parking. Taking inspiration from the project’s interior floor patterns, the signage explores the concept of pixelated tesselations. It takes into account the transitional and fractal elements that make up the motif. The geometry of the motif became an integral part of the surface treatment within the designs of various wayfinding signage. That geometric characteristic of the pixels was also carried into the typography selected for this project. The retail wayfinding designs respond to the bright interior atrium through the use of contrasting light and dark colors.

Once down in the garage levels, the graphics are dictated by bold colors that make the usually dark and drab parking garage livelier. The garage pattern found throughout the wayfinding design mimics the retail wayfinding motif and also incorporates transitional and fractal elements. Unlike the subdued color pallet of the retail wayfinding, the garage graphics rely on a significantly bolder color pattern to help with parking level distinction.

Appropriate graphics can add a level of sophistication to a project. All the while they should serve an important functional purpose of navigating patrons through an environment and making the entire experience a memorable and enjoyable one.
